If you ever wondered where that name came from

Because I was bored at work (and because I love languages and etymologies), I decided to document my numerous names and nicknames. So if you've ever wondered why they call me certain things.. now you know. :)

***

Official name:
Rosanne /row-ZAN/
A portmanteau of "Rosemary" (mom's name) and "Anthony" (dad's name). [English; from parents]

-

Official nicknames:
Mei-mei /MEI-mei/
From my Chinese name (小梅) or "little sister" (妹妹). [Mandarin; from parents/family]
Variants: Mei2, Mei2, Muy-muy (Cantonese; obsolete), Ate Mei-mei (an oxymoron), Mei-chan

Cheche /tse-TSE/
"Older sister" (姐姐). [Cantonese or Mandarin; from family]
Variants: Chech (used by Russell), Cheche Fly

-

More unorthodox names:
2iom /TOO-ee-yom/
Archaic. "Moi-moi" spelled backwards and abbreviated. [English; from Natalie]

Bess' Flen' /BES-FLEN/
"Best Friend" said with an abnormally heavy Chinese accent. Used in casual bantering with housemates, usually in the context of "Yo' mah bess flen!!!" [Chinese English; from Amanda L.]

Carebear /KEHR-behr/
An affectionate title conveying care and love. [English; from Joanna T.]

Chiney /CHEE-nee/
Obsolete. A diminutive of "Christine." [English; from family]

Confucius /kon-FYOO-shus/
A reference to my standing in the elementary school honour roll. [Chinese to English; from Miko]

Peter /PEE-tur/
Means "Rock" in Greek - derived from "Roc", from "Rox", from "Roxanne." [Greek to English; from Brian Lee and Mikee]

Pillar-chan /PIH-lar-chan/
An exhortation to be CCF's support, with added diminutive "-chan." From the phrase "Become Seigaku's pillar of support", said by Tezuka to Echizen in Prince of Tennis. [Japanese and English; from Jorge]

Roxxxanne /rokkkk-SA-yun/
The sexier version of "Rosanne", seen often on the whiteboard outside our first-year dorm room. [English; from Melinda]
Variants: Rox, Roxy (preferred by close guy friends in CCF), Rok-san (how Filipino aunties and uncles pronounce "Rosanne")

-

But usually people just call me Rosy, or Ros, or Rose-Ann, or Rosanna. I think I've stopped caring xD
